Assignment 1-4: Flexplay

Flexplay is a new type of DVD rental. According to Flexplay (2008), “Open the sealed inner package to start your rental. Enjoy 2 days of perfect viewing in any DVD player. Recycle or discard expired DVD” (p. 1). Once the DVD is opened, you will have forty-eight hours of play time before it becomes inoperable. After the forty-eight hour period the indicator ring turns black, and it can be thrown away or disposed in the plastic recyclables. This process does not make a mess. As Flexplay Technologies, Inc. (2007) points out, “The laser beam focuses through the surface of the disc onto an information layer, and is then reflected back to the DVD player's photo detectors” (p. 1).
Flexplay DVDs currently sell for $4.99 each with free shipping. That is not a bad price on new arrival movies. Now compare the price to other movie rental shops that sell previously viewed DVDs. One previously viewed (used) DVD will sell around $2.99 to $14.99, depending on how current a release it is in the rental store. As U.S. Newswire (2008) points out, “Flexplay DVDs, are targeted to consumers who rarely rent or purchase DVDs at traditional video outlets by reaching those customers where they already shop -- such as airports, office supply stores, and so on” (p. 1).
I see some benefits if you are renting. One benefit is no-return; that reduces travel time with the current gas prices that is a huge money saver. If you are not looking to start a DVD collection or you are limited on space in your living quarters. According to Joe Fuller, EVP of Marketing (as cited in U.S. Newswire) (2008), “The traveling consumer is a key target for us, and we hope to provide this customer set with a DVD rental option that is easy to enjoy during travel” (p. 1).
The new technology of Flexplay DVD sounds like a great alternative for people who travel. It is also, safe for the environment. The main point is, it is inexpensive for consumers.
